Autonomy and recognition: The right to choose

Autonomy and Recognition  Poem

My life, My choices

Sexuality itself means mortality-equally

For both man and woman

Let me choose for myself

Because i'm human

Lesbian, gay, Bisexual, transgender

The choice is yours

There's no need to surrender

The world has more problems with girls

Who kiss girls than boys who kiss boys

Age is just an issue of mind over

Matter, if you don’t mind it

It doesn’t matter at all

For you it might matter

But break two souls and

Let the hearts shatter

Freedom is the right to choose

The right to create oneself the

Alternatives of choice

Without the possibility of choice

And the exercise of choice

A man is not a man but a member,

An instrument or a thing.

Why children's right?:Awareness of lack of children's voices

my opinion matters

but it doesn’t seem like it

im on my knees

begging, pleading

listen to me

i should be allowed

to feel safe and not worry

about being shot at

i should be allowed

to express myself

in the classroom

and not belittled

i should not be

forced to believe

in something

The right to education: Comparison and Statements-lots of talk but little action

Education

Let education be your motivation

So that you can be an inspiration

Leaders are readers

And it’s fun doing brainteasers

All children have the right to go to school

But unfortunately not everybody gets the opportunity

Believe me, it’s amazing and cool

With education you can improve your community

Education is all about reading, writing and listening

The list continues and you’ll keep learning

So keep on helping everyone to see the importance of education

And in a few years you’ll be standing with a promotion

Reflective Questions Challenges

Article 22: The right to protection and humanitarian assistance.

By Rushnie Rademeyer and Laquesha Naidoo

  • What do you need to feel safe?

I would need certainty, to know that everything is fine and will be provided for. I would also need proof, my family and the evidence of those that will keep me safe.

  • Name four things you would take with you if you had to move?

I would probably take my phone, something of sentimental value, my family’s photo album and all the resources needed to survive out there like money, passport, and an ID. Obviously family would go with me but family is not a thing in my eyes.

  • What would be the reason to flee?

I would probably flee to another country for a better lifestyle, a better education. People usually move because they believe that they are safer in another country, or there is usually a war or a fight going on in their country. Some countries have different rules and regulations which some of their citizens do not approve of so they would rather flee than stay under the rules that they find hard to obey.

  • What rights do refugee children have?

It is stated that whether or not a refugee child is accompanied by his/her parents he/she needs to receive appropriate protection and humanitarian assistance in the enjoyment of applicable rights set forth in the present Convention and in other international human rights or humanitarian instruments to which the said States are Parties.

It also states that the government has to track down the child’s parents or anyone responsible for him/her.

  • What do you know about the refugees in war?

I know that refugees in war have come across great challenges in their lives and that they live a wild one that they themselves fight for. I know that as much as they would fight for others they have to fight for themselves and their families.

  • What do you know about refugees from poverty?

Firstly this is one of the great challenges refugees have to face and that it is not enough to know how many people are supplanted by conflict but to dig deeper into greater problems such as the poverty they experience.

  • Who is responsible for the children that have to go on the run?

It would be safe to say that their parents are responsible but not in all cases due to the fact that they are not always accompanied by their parents when on the run because usually their parents are the distraction and they are told to make the run.

Stay safe and be a flame!

Every child has the right to education. This means going to school to learn together.

  • Going to school is a right and an obligation. Why do you think this is?

  • How important is it to you for every child to be able to go to school?

  • What can you learn better in a school than outside of it?

In school, there are different subjects you learn about. You might know the basics of something or a subject from home but in school, you learn more about it and discover new things.

E.g Your home language. You learn the basics at home and know how to speak it and the names of common objects in the house. When you go to school, you learn more about it and know where the words come from and sometimes why the objects are called that.

  • What can you learn better when you are not in school?

>You can mostly learn a lot about cultures because when you are home you get taught a lot of cultural belief and what is expected of people your age and gender.

  • What do you learn as a child from working and having a job?

>You learn a lot about being independent
>You learn how to work for long hours while you are young so that you may not suffer when you grow up and have to work for really long hours

  • From who do you learn the most? Your friends, your family, or your teachers?

> Depending on what it is:
> From my friends I learn the most about celebrities and movies and etc.
> From my teachers I learn the most about school-related work and sometimes I also learn interesting facts.

  • What can be reasons for children not to go to school?

> They live too far from school and doesn't have any form of transportation.
> In many cases money is a big problem, so children can't get to school via transport, like taxi's, because they don't have any money.
> Some children are forced to work to generate an income for the family.
> Some families can't afford school fees, so children stay home and don't get any form of education.
> Some children have to look after their siblings.
> Some cultures say that boys may not go to school because they need to work on farms to generate an income.

Article 32 OUR QUESTIONS: AND ANSWERS:

By Kungawo Gwayi,Nompumelelo Myeni,Sinothando Gijana

  1. Do you think you should be able to choose yourself between going to school and working?

  • Yes because in the end, it is all about who you are and what you want to do with your own life in a beneficial way.

  1. Does every child have to help his/her parents? With chores? With earning money?

  • You do not have to help but it is a sign of respect and appreciate all they have done for you. You can help here and there. Yes, you can help with the chores when you know that you want to relieve your parents from some stress.

  1. When is it good to let children have a job and earn money?

  • It is good to let children have jobs when they can take care of themselves well and they know their purpose in that job. Doing something you do not fully understand may only create problems for you since everything is hard to manage since you don’t know what you are doing.

  1. Does a school have to protect you against working too hard?

Working hard at school is not the same as Child Labour, you work hard using your brain and you working hard for your own benefit because no one is forcing you.

  1. Should you earn money when you work hard at school?

It depends what you working hard for, if you clean the school every day then you should be paid but if you working hard to achieve a gold medal, you shouldn’t earn money.

  1. Are you required to work as a child when your parents don’t make enough money?

No, as a child you only supposed to be growing, in school, enjoying your childhood. If your parents don’t work and there is no money at home, you as a child should be taken by the hands of the law (social worker or children’s home)

  1. What can we do in our country to stop child labour in different countries?

  • Find ways to stop child labour.

  • A day wherein each and every province there are police workers or social workers who go to every household and finds out what the children of that household do daily and how they feel on a daily basis.

  • Have an organisation where we take all children that are forced to work and support them and make them feel like children. [We can have a certain day to celebrate them not only World Children’s Day.] We may need people who will help educate them until the age of 18. If the child is already but they are in the elementary level we could take them to a school but they would still be part of our organisation.

  • Celebrate kids around our country and the world more than one time a year.

Article 24 by Salizwa Lumka, Katelyn Monteith, Amahle Mpungose

  1. What do you need to grow up in a healthy way?

  2. To grow up healthy, I need medicine, shelter, vaccinations, nutrition and protection against bacteria. Love is also one thing that balances everything.

  3. What do you need and who takes care of you when you are ill?

  4. I need medicine, warmth and a healthy intake of vitamins and my mom usually takes care of me.

  5. Do you also have the right to unhealthy but tasty food?

  6. I do have the right to junk food, but it is a person’s responsibility to eat them in moderation.

  7. What does food and drinking water have to do with infant mortality according to you?

  8. If the water an infant is consuming is unclean and contaminated with bacteria, the infant is very likely to get cholera or other waterborne illnesses, which leads to dehydration in children. Healthy food also contributes to a child’s immune system.

  9. Do the children in your community have enough healthy food?

  10. At school there is enough healthy and tasty food to sustain us and we have balanced meals. At home where I live, some children don’t get fruits and vegetables and healthy food on a daily basis and rely on fast food as their main food source.

  11. Who should make sure that children get vaccinated?

  12. I think that it is a parent, guardian or family member that should make sure that children get vaccinated. The nurses and doctors can do their job by giving the children vaccinations and persuading them to come for vaccinations.

  13. What can you do yourself to make sure that you are healthy?

  14. Watch what you eat and laugh often as it is an exercise. Try to eat healthy food whenever possible and drink a lot of
